    Tire pressure for trailer tents

Proper tire pressure is important for safety, tire lifespan, fuel consumption, and driving comfort. Check the tire pressure before every long trip, including when you are heading home from the campsite. Don’t forget the spare wheel. In addition to correct tire pressure, we also recommend a maximum speed of 110 km/h.

    Checking tire pressure

At most petrol stations, you can check tire pressure yourself. Do this as close to home as possible, so the tires are still cold. Never reduce tire pressure when the tires are warm, as this can cause the pressure to drop below the recommended level. The recommended pressure varies per trailer tent type and is determined by the manufacturer.

Overview of correct tire pressure >

Which type of tires do I need?

When choosing a tire, you should mainly pay attention to the load index, which indicates the load capacity. For each tire, this should correspond to half of the total weight of the trailer including its contents. For a trailer tent, this is usually a maximum of 750 kg. The load index is shown as a number: the higher the number, the greater the load the tire can support. For a fully loaded trailer tent weighing 750 kg, you should use a load index of at least 74.

The speed index is also important. It is indicated by a letter. The later the letter appears in the alphabet, the higher the permitted speed. M stands for 130 km/h. You should not go lower than that for safety reasons.

    Replacing a trailer tent tire

Do you have a flat tire on your trailer tent? Then you can replace it yourself with the spare wheel. Below is a step-by-step guide plus some useful tips:

    • Park the trailer tent on a quiet, level surface. Engage the handbrake. This keeps it safe and stable while you work.
    • Slightly loosen the wheel nuts.
    • Then lift the trailer tent using a suitable jack.
    • Always place the jack under the chassis.
    • Fully loosen the nuts and remove the old tire.
    • Mount the new tire and hand-tighten the nuts.
    • Lower the trailer tent back onto the ground.
    • Tighten the nuts in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench to prevent uneven pressure.
    • After about 50 kilometers, stop to recheck the wheel nuts and tighten them if necessary.
